Dear Members and Supporters of INTECOL,
The IX Montreal International Congress of
Ecology joint with the 90th Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society
of America
(ESA) was most successful. It attracted an attendance of 4,493
and contained a large number of scientific sessions including
symposia, organized oral sessions, plenary sessions and contributed
presentations. You may be able to find some specifics of
the Congress as you explore the other pages of this website (http://www.intecol.net/IX-Montreal/9-montreal.htm).
The INTECOL Plenary Lecture given by Professor Anthony
Sinclair on his long term studies in the Serengeti was a particular highlight,
as were the awards of Honorary Membership of the Association to Professors Herbert
Bormann and Gene Likens for their
most distinguished contributions to ecology, when this year marked the 50th
anniversary of the start of the Hubbard Brook experiment which has had a huge
influence on ecological science. We were particularly pleased to welcome two past
presidents, Professors Wolfgang Haber and George Knox and a number of long term
supporters of the Association's work including Professors Jerry Olsen and Lech Ryszkowski,
who are possibly the only persons to have attended all previous INTECOL Congresses.
The membership of INTECOL has been growing
steadily during the year, and we now have an excellent coverage of
countries. INTECOL invites you and your friends in
ecology to become members of INTECOL if you and your friends have not already
done so. You may join on the
INTECOL website (http://www.intecol.net) and membership
is currently without charge until 1 January 2006. The membership fee from 2006 will be modest.
You are also reminded that the 8th
INTECOL Wetlands Working Group Meeting will be held in Brazil in 2008 (whose website will be announced
soon) and the 10th International Congress of Ecology (http://www.intecol.net/X-INTECOL/10th_INTECOL_Congress-3.htm) will be held in Brisbane,
Australia,
August 16-21, 2009. Please plan
ahead to attend the next INTECOL events to be held in Southern Hemisphere!
I hope that you
will visit the web site regularly and keep your information up to date. I would be delighted to hear from you as
we seek to help advance the science of ecology world wide.
With kindest
regards,
John A. Lee
President, INTECOL
